20-21 October 2012: Burrill and Swan Lakes
Shoalhaven Paddlers is an informal group of recreational paddlers that enjoy kayaking on the many beautiful waterways in the region. Following the success of this event last year, we have organised another weekend of paddling based at Burrill Lake. Last year we had over 20 Sydney and local paddlers join us and several of the Sydney paddlers have already said they will come again this year. So please spread the word and help make this as much fun as it was last year. There is no cost for participating in the paddles.
You should make your own accommodation arrangements. For visitors, we recommend camping based at the BIG4 Bungalow Park at Burrill Lake, which is offering substantial discounts to visitors that stay overnight on this weekend. Cabins, caravan and camp sites are available and a 25% discount is offered for anyone that stays for 2 nights. If you are coming for Friday night but will arrive after 6.00pm please let reception know and they will inform you of arrangements. Book your accommodation direct with BIG4 – www.bungalow-park.com.au, email@example.com, 1800 552 944. Say you are with Shoalhaven Paddlers to get the discount.
On Saturday we will have a leisurely all-day paddle, with morning tea and lunch stops, launching from the camp site to go across Burrill Lake, to Kings Point and then under the road bridge to the ocean. Some don’t make it to the ocean, as the lure of coffee and cake at the Brill Café is too great. This is right next door to the campsite, giving people of choice of walking there or paddling back to the starting point. Meet at 9am at the beach at the BIG4 for a 9.30am start. Non-campers tell reception you are with our group to gain access to the park.
The Sunday paddle will be on Swan Lake, near Sussex Inlet. This is a pleasant and convenient place to paddle. Sydney folks can finish early if they want; locals can have a longer paddle. Campers meet at 9am on the road near reception for car convoy. Non-campers meet 9.30am at the reserve at Cudmirrah, shortly after you cross the bridge at Swan Lake Inlet and turn off The Spring Road into Goonawarrra Drive.
Paddlers can participate in both excursions or just one.
A communal barbeque is planned for all participants on Saturday night. BYO everything. Perhaps some pre-dinner nibbles or a desert to share. BBQs and table and chairs are provided, but bring our own cutlery, crockery etc.
ALSO please call Helen Moody on 0408 241454 to let her know if you are coming, what you have booked, and if you will be taking part in the Saturday night BBQ or not. Depending on numbers staying at the BIG4 the owners may again provide salads and desert for the BBQ, but Helen needs to know the numbers to negotiate this.
Information sent to you concerning paddles in the Shoalhaven district is being communicated to kayakers interested in the company of others on the water. The information is passed on as received and has not necessarily been checked for accuracy. We are not a club and have no insurance or legal liability. Kayaking has risks. Each kayaker must be entirely responsible for their own safety, for having suitable equipment, for choosing their route and for their decision to accept water and weather conditions.
Note that regulations have changed and lifejackets must be worn when 100m or more from shore. See http://www.lifejacketwearit.com.au/.
