Lifestart Kayak for Kids is an inspirational paddling challenge which takes place on Sydney Harbour every year to support children with a disability or developmental delay. Disabilities can range from the more widely known Down syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder to much rarer genetic disorders. Kayak for Kids enables Lifestart to build community awareness about the aspirations and needs of families, children and young people living with disability, and at the same time raise funds for specialist support services. Lifestart’s vision is for all children and young people to be able to participate inclusively and meaningfully in the community.
This year’s Kayak for Kids will be held on Sunday the 20th of March. It is anticipated that around 1,400 paddlers and 5,000 spectators will participate, with free food, fun and entertainment at Lifestart’s annual family picnic at Clifton Gardens after the paddle. It is the perfect vehicle for family, friends and workmates to admire the beauty of Sydney Harbour in a unique kayaking event. It is also a team building exercise with a difference.
The Kayak for Kids course is broken up into four stages and the team entry fee includes hire of a three-seater kayak, personal flotation devices (lifejackets) and paddles for any participants who are not regular paddlers. Teams of three to twelve people can enter the Corporate Challenge Cup, where each person has to paddle one of four legs of the course with each stage being around 4.5 kilometres and taking between 30 minutes to complete. The harbour will be even more spectacular than usual with around 100 corporate teams of 12 already signed up for their part in the paddle.
There’s also a challenge for experienced paddlers who own their own solo or double craft, whether a surf ski, sea kayak or stand up paddle board, and the competition will be fierce. Registration on the day begins from 6.30am at Blues Point.
Paddlers are asked to raise as much as they can in support of Lifestart by creating their own fundraising page via the Everyday Hero website. Donors receive an automatically generated tax receipt and every donation is recorded on the donor’s web page along with any messages of support.
Kayak for Kids is Lifestart’s major annual fundraising event. They are hoping to raise upwards of $400,000 in 2016.
Registrations are now open at www.kayakforkids.com.au.
